Consumer Hardlines: Mattress Imports
Herein, we update our continuing analyses on US mattress imports with the May 2023 and June 2023 mattress import data as posted on the Department of Commerce, US International Trade Commission DataWeb at Importantly, we also discuss and comment on the filing of another anti-dumping (AD) duty / countervailing duty (CVD) petition and the preliminary investigations by the USITC. In late July, a group of US producers and unions (together called the petitioners) filed an AD petition on mattress imports from 12 countries: Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Burma, India, Italy, Kosovo, Mexico, Philippines, Poland, Slovenia, Spain, and Taiwan. They also filed a CVD petition against Indonesia, already subject to mattress AD tariffs (called margins), alleging a government subsidy. Further commentary is below. Under Statistics, we update data for June 2023 versus June 2022 (Y/Y comp) and May 2023 (M/M comp). Each table’s lower half provides similar data for the 12 countries targeted by the new AD petition. In June, total imported units fell ~9% Y/Y but rose ~11% M/M. The dollar value of June mattress imports also fell ~17% Y/Y but advanced ~1% M/M. On the following pages, we present more statistical tables and charts for readers to gauge intermediate and longer-term import trends.
