Fireside Chat Highlights the Value of Soluna's Proprietary Technologies
We recently hosted Soluna Computing Chief Technology Officer Dipul Patel for a fireside chat, which included a discussion of the recent operational execution at Project Sophie and Project Dorothy, the success of the company’s proprietary operating software Maestro OS, and how Soluna’s technology can support the massive growth of AI. This report contains a transcript of the fireside chat from October 10, 2023, which can be accessed here. Soluna’s technology delivers flawless performance at Project Sophie and Project Dorothy despite the record temperatures and peak demand. In the past months, the company has successfully shifted Project Sophie (25 MW) to all hosting and also brought online its flagship Project Dorothy (50 MW) with both hosting and propriety mining. We see the continued execution at multiple project sites, especially given the extreme temperatures, as an important milestone for prospective project operators and investors in future projects. Maestro OS is at the heart of the successful execution. Patel explained how the company’s proprietary Maestro OS enables its data centers to work seamlessly in conjunction with the wind farm operators and be able to react to changes in power demand and pricing. The system provides real-time data and analysis for the operations and can safely reach 99% curtailment in less than one minute to meet the demand response needs of the grid. Maestro OS has also shown it is able to tailor its curtailment algorithms to meet the different needs of utilities and the grid in different geographic locations. Modular data centers reach record efficiency levels. Patel talked about the success of the company’s modular data centers, and in particular how they achieved a record power usage effectiveness (PUE) of 1.01 at Project Dorothy (meaning that more than 99% of the energy generated is employed). The proprietary modular data centers are easily adapted to each site and are optimally configured and equipped with multiple fans so that they can operate without liquid cooling or water. In addition, its modular plug and play systems are designed to allow for easy upgrades and changes to the computing hardware, positioning its project to be ready to support the increased demand from AI. Soluna helps solve the problem of power curtailment and in turn supports the growth of renewable energy. Renewable power plants are increasingly needing to ‘curtail’ their power generation due to oversupply. By purchasing electricity that would have otherwise been unsold, Soluna helps improve project economics for renewable power and further its growth on the grid. Moreover, data centers can easily ramp down their power use to help balance the grid in times of extreme power demand.
