Water Tower Hour Recap

Rubicon Organics is a leading producer of premium cannabis products in Canada. In a challenging market, the company is differentiated by offering top-shelf, organically grown flower in the higher-margin premium market. Interim CEO, CFO, and Director Margaret Brodie joined us on The Water Tower Hour to discuss how Rubicon is overcoming the common Canadian obstacles. The country is plagued by high taxes, overcapacity, and a thriving traditional market. For many operators, this has led to large losses and unsustainable businesses. Rubicon has bucked the trend by developing strong brands and generating customer loyalty. Brodie explained the benefits of organic, sun-grown cannabis and how budtenders rank two of Rubicon’s brands in their top three most recommended lists. The company has 5.4% of the premium flower category and is number one in topicals with a 22.5% market share. Brodie explained the benefits of having three flower brands that allow Rubicon to reach different consumers. All three are non-irradiated, organic certified, high in terpenes, and hand trimmed. We discussed how a proper hang-dry and cure process is critical to creating top-shelf products. Rubicon is focused on profitability and has delivered five consecutive quarters of positive adjusted EBITDA and four consecutive quarters of positive operating cash flow. Brodie explained the processes and discipline that have driven the consistent and sustainable results. The conversation concluded by exploring global opportunities. While Rubicon has strong-enough demand solely from Canadian consumers, long term there may be an opportunity to export globally. Germany and Australia are robust medical markets moving toward full legalization. You can listen to the episode on Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts, and Spotify as well as our website.
