Tech Talk: Blockchain

The size of the global blockchain market was $11 billion in 2022, and is projected to grow to $469 billion by 2030, a CAGR of 60%, according to Fortune Business Insights. The growth of the blockchain market is being driven by the increasing adoption of blockchain technology in a wide range of industries, such as financial services, supply chain management, healthcare, and government. Simply put, a blockchain is a distributed ledger that records transactions across a network of computers. Each block in the chain contains transactions, and every time a new transaction occurs on the blockchain, a record of that transaction is added to every participant’s ledger. The decentralized database managed by multiple participants is known as distributed ledger technology (DLT). Blockchain is a type of DLT in which transactions are recorded with an immutable cryptographic signature called a hash. Blockchain and Bitcoin are two different things, even though they are often confused with each other. Bitcoin is a cryptocurrency, while blockchain is a DLT. Some of the key trends in blockchain include decentralized finance (DeFi), non-fungible tokens (NFTs), enterprise blockchain adoption, green blockchain, privacy-preserving blockchain, cross-chain interoperability, and blockchain governance. There are a number of vendors in the blockchain market. Some of the leading vendors are trillion-dollar multinationals and some are startups, including Amazon (AMZN), Microsoft (MSFT), IBM (IBM), Ripple (private), and Hyperledger (open-source project).
