Water Tower Hour Recap

Pineapple Financial’s CEO Shubha Dasgupta joined us on the Water Tower Hour podcast. Those interested can listen to this podcast on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or on our website Links accessible in our full report. Dasgupta provided a review of Pineapple’s business model, market opportunity, product pipeline, and Maui, which is its recent AI product launch. Canada’s mortgage market looking to rebound after a tough 2023. At roughly $400 billion in volume in 2023, PAPL believes the market has been pressured by the rapid rise in interest rates. Given the short-term nature of Canadian mortgages (one to five years) and very favorable demographic trends (mainly strong population growth), PAPL believes volumes could reach $700-800 billon over the next couple of years. PAPL believes it is in an excellent position to take share. Although PAPL faces numerous angles of competition from traditional mortgage lenders to other technology companies, it believes its integrated SaaS model provides a unique and defensible market position. As such, it is highly confident it can grow its processed volume from its current $2 billion (~5% share) materially faster than the market. The market offers plenty of room for product/service extensions. In addition to facilitating faster online mortgage processing, PAPL believes mortgage insurance is the next most logical adjacency for it to address. This could significantly expand its effective take-rate, which currently stands at ~20 bps of process loan volume. Maui represents long-term investment in AI. Dasgupta shared that Maui, its initial foray into AI, has been several years in the works. In addition, PAPL has levered the efforts of its primary partner, Microsoft, to help mitigate significant start-up costs. While it is still early days, Maui has yielded a client-facing tool that has dramatically lowered onboarding times, while simultaneously increasing customization.
