Water Tower Hour Recap
BioLargo CEO Dennis Calvert recently joined us on the Water Tower Hour podcast to discuss the company’s business model and strategy. Those interested can listen to this podcast on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or on our website. Links are accessible in our full report. Calvert highlighted BioLargo’s 15-year investment in building science- and engineering-based innovation engines that are now powering the commercialization of several novel technologies to tackle some of humanity’s most intractable problems. Built on science and engineering expertise. Calvert described BioLargo’s core competencies, including rigorous scientific discovery partnering with innovative engineering to identify market niches where its electrochemical expertise can develop a novel solution to solve water and air contamination issues, aid in combating infections, and, more recently, create a domestically sourced alternative to Li-Ion batteries for long-term energy storage. The company then partners with existing suppliers to these markets in order to rapidly commercialize its discoveries and technologies. Everyone loves their pets but hates the smell. BLGO’s Pooph consumer pet odor control product highlights the company’s success in penetrating the consumer market with a superior product. Pooph is already being sold through Walmart (NYSE: WMT) and Amazon (NASDQ: AMZN) and BioLargo is looking to expand retail partners to 20,000-plus stores as additional retailers come onboard, accelerating revenue growth and profitability in 2024. Cleaning up forever chemicals. With an increased focus on polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) and a growing understanding how these substances, which nature cannot break down on its own, are bioaccumulating in our air and water, as well as our bodies, cost-effective solutions to deal with the issue are urgently needed. BioLargo’s electrochemical expertise was brought in to deal with the problem and the company developed a unique process and equipment—aqueous electrostatic concentrator (AEC)—that can remove PFAS and perfluorooctanesulfonic acid (PFOS) to undetectable levels, while producing 40,000x less waste than existing activated carbon, or ion exchange contaminant removal alternatives, creating a truly sustainable solution. Germ warfare. Another niche highlighted in the discussion where BLGO’s technology is finding application is wound treatment and infection control areas of the healthcare market. The company has developed wound irrigation solution and infection control programs, which have received FDA 501(K) approval for commercialization. BioLargo is currently exploring major commercial partnerships to take these products into the healthcare market.
