Water Tower Hour Recap

On this week’s Water Tower Hour podcast, Peter Gastreich, Managing Director/Natural Resources at WTR, and Chris Degner, Managing Director/ Investor Relations Advisory at WTR discuss the latest in the oil & gas industry in Colombia and LatAm. Gastreich and Degner have more than 40 years of combined oil & gas industry experience working for global investment banks and large oil & gas companies in developed and developing countries, including Colombia. This latest episode is available on Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts, Spotify, or on the WTR website. Links are accessible in our full report. Key themes include independent operators filling in gaps left behind by larger companies, natural gas in the context of energy transition, and whether government policy for the sector would be sustained. The discussion builds on WTR reports, including Oil & Gas Operators Guiding for Bottom-Up Growth… and Striking a Balance Between Energy Security and Fiscal Stability. Gastreich discusses independent operators scaling up onshore in Colombia and LatAm. The independents are filling in gaps left by large national oil companies, which have been directing more capex toward exploring big offshore projects with international oil companies and toward energy transition projects. Degner highlights the appeal of Colombia’s natural gas industry. The country has a strong outlook for gas demand supported in part by the country’s energy transition plan. Colombia’s gas producers benefit by selling into an undersupplied market that rewards producers with free market gas prices that are high by international standards. A decade of rising O&G demand, declining reserves and exports, and recent government policies point to energy security risks. On the other hand, technology is advancing in Colombia as some companies are starting to deploy directional drilling and 3D seismic. For natural gas, the northern and offshore areas have large potential. Also, if the government ever reconsidered the fracking ban, this would open potential to explore Colombia’s shale resources.
