Electric Vehicles - Tosh trashes graphite

Leading lithium-ion battery manufacturer Toshiba has announced what it calls “a game changing development” which will allow an Electric Vehicle to travel 320 kilometres after a 6 minute Ultra Rapid recharge.

Although their current cells already use lithium titanate as the anode, they specifically claimed that this development would be to the detriment of graphite anodes.

Their new battery, with a newly developed titanium niobium oxide anode retains 90% of its charge, even after 5,000 charging cycles and is apparently less likely to suffer from lithium metal deposition under fast charge, or cold charging conditions. Lithium metal deposition is apparently a major cause of battery degradation over time.
