Johnson Matthey (JMAT) - Launches new lithium-ion cathode material

Johnson Matthey in yesterday’s Capital Markets Day presentation may well have created a new buzzword, eLNO, their new wonder lithium-ion battery material.

This is the battery materials area where they will be spending the £200m mentioned yesterday morning and they hope to produce 10,000 tonnes per annum of eLNO from 2021. LNO stands for Lithium Nickel Oxide and please don’t look for it in our glossary of lithium-ion battery cathode materials in the last quarterly, as we haven’t come across it before! Presumably the little e stands for electric. It should also be pointed out that googling e LNO, LNO or Lithium Nickel Oxide doesn’t come up with many hits. Quite how potential customers of eLNO are supposed to do any due diligence is unclear.
