American Water (NYSE: AWK), the nation’s largest publicly traded water and wastewater utility company, today announced Vice President and Chief Science Advisor Dr. Mark LeChevallier has been appointed to the Water Science and Technology Board of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine (National Academies).
The Water Science and Technology Board was established in the National Academies to provide a focal point for studies related to water resources accomplished under the aegis of the National Academy of Sciences and the National Academy of Engineering. The board's objective is to improve the scientific and technological basis for resolving important questions and issues associated with the efficient management and use of water resources.
Dr. LeChevallier has worked for American Water for more than 30 years and in his current role is engaged in research and development, innovation, and environmental compliance and stewardship programs. He has authored or coauthored over 100 research papers, most in peer-reviewed journals and several of his papers have received awards from the American Water Works Association for outstanding contributions to the science of water treatment. Members of the Board are chosen through a careful process of search and selection in an endeavor to assemble a committee of the highest competence; they are chosen on the strength of their professional qualifications. Appointments are made by the Chairman of the National Research Council. The term of appointment is typically 3 years.
In carrying out its responsibilities and to serve the national interest, the board responds to requests for evaluations and advice concerning specific and generic issues in water resources, influences action by initiating studies of issues that merit consideration by public agencies and others, identifies issues and topics of research related to water resources, and cooperates with other units of the National Academies and groups with mutual interests outside the National Academies.
The board's scope covers all dimensions of water resources, including science, engineering, economics, policy, educational issues, and social aspects.
