The engine weight of just 2,050 lbs was achieved by eliminating unnecessary mass without compromising performance. Delivering up to 500 hp (373 kW), the X12 has the highest power-to-weight ratio of any heavy-duty engine from 10 liters to 16 liters in size.

“Weight is critical in all applications – vocational and bulk haulers, as well as regional haul and pick-up and delivery. The Cummins X12 will provide customers with the lightest engine in the Class 8 market,” said Amy Boerger, Vice President of Sales at Cummins. “The X12 is the perfect example of how customer and market needs drive the innovation of Cummins products.”

Innovations across the entire Cummins portfolio help to deliver even more efficiency and weight savings to the Cummins X12. The X12 uses the Single Module™ aftertreatment system, which takes up to 60 percent less space and weighs up to 40 percent less than prior aftertreatment configurations. Combined engine and aftertreatment weight for the X12 is around 2,340 lb – significantly lower than that of any other heavy-duty engine system. Further weight reduction can be achieved when paired with the Endurant™ transmission from the Eaton Cummins Automated Transmission Technologies joint venture, which is the lightest, most efficient 1,850 ft. lb. of torque capable transmission in the industry – also a recipient of the HDT Top 20 award this year.

The Cummins X12 redefines the entire medium-bore engine category (10 liter – 13 liter), setting new standards for productivity in regional-haul, vocational and intermodal truck applications.

This award comes just a year after the X15™ engine won the same award in 2017. Both the X12 and X15 will be on display at the Cummins booth #2321 at TMC’s Annual Meeting & Transportation Technology Exhibit in March.
