Vital Signs: Actionable charts

Key Points: Value related names are improving vs. the previous momentum/growth areas of the market. Many areas that have underperformed are now showing leadership characteristics. Many banks and thrifts have developed bullish ascending triangles and are hitting multi-month RS highs. (ex. WFC, CIT, CMA, KEY, WBS, FITB, HWC, HBAN, FHN, and WD) Consumer Discretionary is reversing price and RS downtrends and we believe the laggards and those that were subject to Covis-19 closings are going to show near-term outperformance as investors play leap frog into the down and out areas of the market. Vermilion Compass: Weekly Equity Strategy

Bulls Remain In Control It is hard to believe the market is within reach of its prior highs considering everything that has transpired this year: rioting/looting, a global pandemic, historic unemployment levels, and rising US-China tensions. The market is looking past these concerns in favor of the positives, namely: historic fiscal and monetary support, reopening the economy/flattening the curve, COVID-19 vaccine/treatment hopes, and low rates. As long as the breakouts that we highlighted last week (and again below) continue to hold, a bullish stance is appropriate. Below we highlight reason...

Vermilion Compass: Weekly Equity Strategy

Primarily responsible for new highs in these indexes is Technology (esp. software and semis/semi suppliers) and FAANG stocks. While these areas all remain bullish, we still have some reservations due to the massive disparity in performance between them and the Materials (XLB, XME) and Energy (RYE) Sectors, and also small-caps (IWM) which continue to hit new RS lows. Still, the Materials and Energy Secto...

Vermilion Compass: Weekly Equity Strategy

Waiting on Small-Caps This market continues to be dominated by signals that suggest we are in the early stages of a new bull phase, which we discuss below. At the same time, small-caps continue to be one area of the market that gives us some reason for pause as neither the Russell 2000 or S&P Small Cap 600 indexes have been able to make bullish price or RS inflections. • Small-Caps Still Below Resistance. The major US large- and mid-cap indexes have all decisively broken out to either all-time highs or 52-week highs, leaving small-caps behind. This situation can only happen for so long becau...
