H2APEX acquires HH2E Lubminwerk GmbH along with a strategically significant hydrogen project at the Lubmin site.

  • H2APEX expands its industrial hydrogen business in Lubmin, Germany’s key location for the hydrogen industry
  • Acquisition strengthens strategic focus on expanding in-house hydrogen production
  • Up to 1.000 MW of additional electrolysis capacity for green hydrogen production
  • First expansion phase of 100 MW at both Lubmin projects planned for completion in 2028

Rostock, Grevenmacher (Grand Duchy of Luxembourg), Lubmin, March 31, 2025 – H2APEX from Rostock, a 100% subsidiary of H2APEX Group SCA (ISIN: LU0472835155), a leading developer and operator of green hydrogen electrolysis plants, has acquired the hydrogen project of Hamburg-based HH2E at the Lubmin site. H2APEX intends to complete the green hydrogen production facility initially planned by HH2E. This acquisition reinforces H2APEX’s strategic focus on expanding its own hydrogen production and strengthens its activities at Germany’s most important hydrogen industry hub. The company now operates two green hydrogen projects at the site of the former nuclear power plant on the Greifswald Bodden.

With this new project, H2APEX also acquires the land, infrastructure, and all necessary connections for a successful hydrogen project, including existing electricity and water supply connections. Additionally, the site provides direct access to multiple pipelines, which are set to be converted to hydrogen operation by 2027, enabling integration into Germany’s core hydrogen network. The purchase price for the project amounts to XY million euros.

Peter Rößner, CEO of H2APEX, commented:
"By acquiring the project in Lubmin, H2APEX strengthens its position as a national and, in the future, an international hydrogen supplier. Lubmin is the most promising location for the German hydrogen industry, serving as a key hub in the country’s core hydrogen network and benefiting from its proximity to offshore wind farms. This newly acquired project complements our existing engagement perfectly. It allows us to leverage synergies, enhance efficiencies, and gain a strategic competitive advantage. The acquisition aligns with our strategic goal of expanding and accelerating our hydrogen production capacities."

H2APEX sees significant potential in the ongoing consolidation of Germany’s green hydrogen market. The group is well-positioned to acquire projects from competitors exiting the market, thereby increasing its market share and emerging stronger from the current consolidation phase. In the medium to long term, H2APEX expects to generate the majority of its revenue from operating its own facilities, ensuring greater revenue stability, predictable cash flows, and improved scalability—ultimately providing a solid foundation for sustainable long-term growth.

Since 2023, H2APEX has been developing its own electrolysis plant in Lubmin, with the first expansion phase of 100 MW scheduled for completion in 2028. The company plans to scale this facility to 600 MW of installed electrolysis capacity. Following the acquisition of HH2E’s project, H2APEX will construct an additional 100 MW plant in its first phase, also set for completion by 2028, with a mid-term expansion to 1.000 MW.

The electricity used in both projects will be sourced predominantly from northern Germany and exclusively from renewable sources, making it 100% green. Thanks to its proximity to the core hydrogen network, offshore wind farms, and an existing substation, the project benefits from strategically ideal conditions for successful implementation.

The planned investments amounting to a three-digit million € sum for the first expansion phase of the acquired project include infrastructure development, feasibility studies, planning and approval processes, and internal and external personnel costs. H2APEX will manage the construction and operation of the facilities in-house, leveraging expertise from previous successful projects and an extensive partner network across all technical fields. This is exemplified by its existing plant at its headquarters in Rostock-Laage, as well as the "H2-Wyhlen" and "HyBit" projects in Bremen, where H2APEX has built electrolysis facilities.

About H2APEX

The operational core of H2APEX was founded in 2000 in Rostock/Laage and has been fully dedicated to clean hydrogen production, storage, and distribution since 2012. As a pioneer in the field, H2APEX aims to establish itself as an internationally recognized developer and operator of hydrogen facilities. The company specializes in developing, constructing, selling, or operating green hydrogen plants with electrolysis capacities of up to 1 GW. These plants support the decarbonization of industrial value chains and the production of green hydrogen and hydrogen derivatives such as LOHC (Liquid Organic Hydrogen Carriers) and e-fuels. They are used in industries such as steel, chemicals, and cement, as well as other energy-intensive sectors.
Additionally, H2APEX provides infrastructure and logistics solutions, particularly for industrial applications in warehouses, ports, and production facilities.
