US-China trade risk, Fitch reminder v Vaccine, trough hopes Ahead: Tad less exuberance, more sobriety. A tug ‘o war may be at play as the bearish and momentum players focus on US-China risk and dire global projections of Fitch downturn and the Bullish play the COVID-19 ‘Vaccine and trough’ card. Expect trade to again exercise a bit less enthusiasm and a tad more prudence – locking in some profit appears alluring and prudent. US up, Asia mixed. US (S&P 500 +1.23%, DJIA +2.17%, NASDAQ +0.17%). Vermilion Compass: Weekly Equity Strategy

Market In “Wait-And-See” Phase We started to see waning upside momentum in the S&P 500 last week with the rising wedge breakdown and 2760 support level violation on Tuesday. Despite this, there was no downside follow through the following day as investors digested a new $484B fiscal relief package. This led to the S&P 500 finding support at 2725-2735 which leads us to where we are now -- testing recent highs. We see waning upside momentum and several aspects continue to suggest the S&P 500 remains vulnerable to a pullback, but the market is simply not breaking down. We believe some near-term ...

Vermilion Macro Vision: Sector Synopsis

The following synopsis provides Summary details of our current investment outlook: • U.S. dollar: The U.S. dollar had attempted a breakdown but has thus far held firm at the 96.61 level. However, the longer-term downtrend remains intact with the dollar unable to overtake its 200-day moving average at 97.70. A break to the downside will tip the scale in the direction of emerging markets and precious metals, while a break to the upside will likely foster another surge into growth related names. • High yield spreads: Spreads continue to narrow and suggest a risk-on environment. The Fed remain...

Special Focus Covid-19/Dividends: Delays of AGMs and dividend consequences

The coronavirus crisis also affects companies' dividend payments, first, due to AGMs being postponed and foremost due to the economic turmoil, potential regulatory intervention and cash restraints. Below we present an overview of the biggest dividend risks and potential timelines for AGMs and subsequent 2019 dividend pay-outs in our Coverage universe. Dividend risks We clearly see the highest risk for dividends in the banking sector as many regulators have already issued recommendations to suspend dividend payments (Czech Republic, Sweden), urge banks to postpone the dividend decision (Hung...

COVID-19 battles persist, Brent retreats Week Ahead: Challenging, rebound elusive. Downwardly revised economic projections by financial institutions amid broadening anti-virus measures worldwide are not the stuff of which rebounds are readily made. Brent has again retreated, governed by the demand-supply double whammy – the former plunging on declining economic growth, the latter vis-à-vis OPEC+ opening the taps come 1 April threatening to flood an already over-supplied market. With COVID-19 raging unabated and anti-contagion measures boding ill for the global economy, an OPEC+ rapprochement...

Caution prevails for now Ahead: Tense, absent any real drivers. Trump’s latest warning yesterday (the US President threatened higher tariffs if China does not make a deal; a tactic unsuccessful thus far, as China appears ready to wait Trump out) has poured cold water on the optimism, largely baseless, that has been driving markets recently – FOMO, likely the main factor. The market’s slow crawl upward may be shelved now in favor of a more cautious approach, maybe even some profit taking as it hits investors that a trade deal is further than they thought. Potentially of interest, minutes from ...
