Munich Re Life US and the American Cancer Society Join Forces in the Fight Against Cancer

Munich Re Life US together with the American Cancer Society (ACS) today announced a four-year partnership amplifying both organizations’ commitment to saving more lives from cancer. As part of the partnership, Munich Re and ACS will collaborate on cancer-related research initiatives involving their respective research and medical teams. In addition, Munich Re will partially fund two critical ACS Research Scholar Grants in the aggregate of $250,000 as well as activate employee giving by launching nationwide philanthropic campaigns and volunteer opportunities.

With this partnership, Munich Re becomes the first company in the reinsurance space to support ACS Research Scholar Grants. Recipients are early-stage investigators with innovative ideas that are on the cutting edge of science.

“We are honored to embark upon this journey with a leading advocacy organization making valuable contributions to the field of cancer research,” said Marc-Andre Giguere, President and CEO, US Life and Health, Munich Re Life US. “Cancer mortality is an important area of focus for us and being able to support and develop pioneering ideas to prevent cancer-related deaths, improve quantity and quality of lives and identify treatments that enhance medical outcomes aligns perfectly with our values and mission.”

“To change the future of cancer, we need to continue to invest in the most brilliant young investigators and most innovative cancer research,” explained William Phelps, PhD, Senior Vice President for Extramural Research at the American Cancer Society. “We are pleased to have a partner in Munich Re whose continued support of the Society’s mission will help us make a meaningful difference in every community.”

ACS currently supports research and training grants in a wide range of cancer-related disciplines at 57 institutions across the United States. At any one point in time, the Society directs donated dollars to fund more than 800 grantees throughout the country and across cancer types. Since 1946, ACS has invested more than $4.9 billion including funding 49 researchers who went on to win the Nobel Prize.
