Northern Trust’s Susan Snyder Elected to ACTEC Board and Executive Committee

Northern Trust announced today that Susan D. Snyder, Trust Counsel and Associate General Counsel, has been elected a member of the Board of Regents and the Executive Committee of the American College of Trust & Estate Counsel (ACTEC).

Snyder was elected as an ACTEC Fellow in 2004. She currently serves on the organization’s Fiduciary Litigation; Digital Property; Communications; and State Chairs steering committees and is the Great Lakes Region Chair. Snyder is also the Executive Producer of ACTEC Trust and Estate Talk, the College’s recently launched podcast for wealth professionals.

“Susan Snyder’s election to ACTEC’s Board of Regents and Executive Committee is a testament to her invaluable contribution and commitment to our industry,” Northern Trust General Counsel Susan Levy said. “As Susan is only the second ACTEC Fellow from a trust company ever appointed to its Executive Committee, it is truly an honor to announce her election.”

ACTEC is a professional society of peer-elected trust and estate lawyers who have demonstrated the highest level of integrity, commitment to the profession, competence and experience. Fellows are selected on the basis of experience, professional reputation and ability in the fields of trusts and estates and on the basis of having made substantial contributions to these fields through lecturing, writing, teaching, and bar activities.

A total of 10 Northern Trust partners are ACTEC Fellows.

Snyder’s election occurred at the ACTEC Annual Meeting in San Antonio on March 11, 2018. Snyder was simultaneously elected the new “at large” member of the College’s Executive Committee. The Board of Regents is ACTEC’s policy making authority, while the Executive Committee manages the Counsel’s day-to-day affairs.

As Trust Counsel and Associate General Counsel in the Legal Department at Northern Trust, Snyder oversees a team of trust and estate attorneys and paraprofessionals, providing legal counsel to Northern Trust partners on estate and trust administration, risk management, transfer and income tax compliance, and fiduciary litigation. Prior to joining Northern Trust in 2005, Susan was a Partner with Sachnoff & Weaver, Ltd., where she counseled private wealth clients on estate planning, estate and trust administration, transfer tax planning and fiduciary litigation. Before joining Sachnoff & Weaver, Ltd, Susan was an attorney with McDermott Will & Emery in their Estate Planning and Probate group. Snyder holds a law degree from Northwestern University School of Law, where she was an Editor of the Journal of International Law and Business, and a B.A. in International Studies and French from Wichita State University.

In addition to her roles at ACTEC, Snyder serves as a Uniform Law Commissioner for Illinois. She is a member of the Uniform Law Commission’s Directed Trust Act; Electronic Wills; and Fiduciary Income and Principal Act Drafting committees. Snyder is also a member of the American Bankers Association Trust Counsel Committee and the National Conference of Lawyers and Corporate Fiduciaries. She is the chair of the Legislative Committee of the Corporate Fiduciaries Association of Illinois. Snyder is a frequent speaker on estate planning and administration topics for the American College of Trust and Estate Counsel, Heckerling Institute on Estate Planning, American Law Institute-Continuing Legal Education (ALI-CLE), Illinois Institute of Continuing Legal Education, and Chicago Bar Association.
