T Magazine Unveils Print, Digital Refresh Featuring New Columns and Bold Voices

T Magazine will introduce its refresh online today, Wednesday, Feb. 7, and in print on Sunday, Feb. 18, featuring new content and a new look under the direction of editor in chief Hanya Yanagihara and creative director Patrick Li. With Ms. Yanagihara at the helm, readers will find a richness of lively elevated writing, intimate profiles, stunning photography, and diverse voices that define the cultural moment we live in now.

T will cast a more global lens that reveals to readers some of today’s most interesting stories from around the world, in a way that is more immediate than ever before. The magazine will have a more expansive approach to covering fashion, luxury and culturally rich subject matter.

“While we kept many things about the current T intact — the sophisticated, disciplined font vocabulary; the emphasis on negative space; the straightforward and unfussy display — we changed the typography to make it feel more urgent and newsier, which felt tonally appropriate for this cultural moment,” said Ms. Yanagihara. “We looked at ’70s-era newsmagazines, Tibor Kalman's Colors, and art posters by Jim Dine for inspiration to create a denser, more kinetic page that alludes to some of The Times's history, as well.”

“T's redesign reflects the urgency of Hanya's magazine. The new custom typography and expansive layouts will allow for a more emphatic visual language that is less templated and more elegantly experimental,” added Mr. Li.

T's new front-of-book section, “People Places and Things,” reflects T's three broad interests: the artists of all stripes and disciplines who are making and changing the culture; the spaces (be they homes, destinations, museums, galleries or works of architecture) that matter; and the objects (fashion, interior and industrial design, jewelry, accessories and art) that represent the most astonishing and inventive works being made today.

The section opens with "T Introduces," T’s showcase for the people, places, things or ideas that may not have changed the culture yet, but that T editors are betting will.

Other new features and columns include:

Other Rooms: a spotlight on one extraordinary (and totally nonessential) space;

Page 76: an artist interprets what’s happening on page 76 of several new books;

Material Culture: T highlights a single craft — and how it’s being adapted, rethought and remade for the 21st century;

Rediscoveries: an in-depth look at something in our culture that may have gone overlooked.

TMagazine.com will also be aggressively populating its already popular video series, "Tell T a Joke,” "Make T Something," and "Read T a Poem." Lauren Ridloff, the “T Introduces” subject this month and the star of the forthcoming Broadway revival of "Children of a Lesser God," reads a poem in ASL (American Sign Language). T will also add new video franchises and social media-specific content in the coming months.

T’s new cover story celebrates the feminist artist Judy Chicago who, at 78, will be the subject of a number of major solo gallery and museum shows over the next 18 months. The past year saw her most celebrated work, “The Dinner Party” (1979), become a pop-cultural touchstone.

For this issue’s cover, T revisited a classic advertisement that appeared in Artforum shortly after Ms. Chicago’s solo show at California State University, Fullerton, in December 1970. The photo featured Ms. Chicago, then 31, standing tough in a boxing ring, her arms draped over the ropes like a champ. T puts Ms. Chicago back in the ring — or, rather, just outside of it; she is more of the coach now, a leader whose work has been steadily recognized through the years in mainstream and institutional art circles. In the ring are Jenny Shimizu and Dilone, models who have, in their own ways, been a force for change and diversity in the world of fashion (shot by New York-based photographer and frequent T contributor Collier Schorr).

This issue also marks the debut of T's three new contributing fashion editors: Suzanne Koller, Alastair McKimm and Jay Massacret. Ms. Koller and Mr. McKimm both contributed stories to this issue.

T Magazine, which debuted in 2004, is available online at TMagazine.com and is distributed in The Sunday New York Times and The New York Times International Edition in Europe.

T was recently nominated for a 2017 ASME National Magazine Award in the General Excellence category for Service and Lifestyle, honoring publications covering food, travel and design, as well as fashion and beauty.
