Brent recoups, COVID lingers Ahead: Buying weakness, higher oil … capped by COVID. Following weakness, expect some buying into the dip. Helping, Brent has retaken some lost ground on indications of an improving demand outlook as economies (e.g., China) reopen for business – still, upside will remain capped on plans of US oil producers to resume some production in July. Meanwhile, Wave 2 of COVID-19 is a clear and present danger, which will cap any upside – e.g., after re-opening segments of its economy, the US recorded its largest number of new cases since the outbreak. In addition, US jobles...

IMF downgrade, US jobs weakness, COVID resurgence Ahead: Cautious trade at play. The IMF again downwardly revised its global growth forecast, projecting 2020 GDP of -4.9%, lower than the -3% predicted in April. Enthusiasm will be further tempered ahead of US jobless claims, which are expected to remain extraordinarily high, while a resurgence in confirmed COVID-19 cases in the US (as well as Germany, LatAm), linked to the reopening of businesses, is also dimming the economic recovery outlook. In turn, Brent has retreated, albeit is finding some support from US-China trade hopes. US down, A...

COVID-19 hopes v headwinds Ahead: Upside bias, early on. The risk trade no doubt faces some headwinds, but the cautious hope for successful re-openings of COVID-hit economies and a vaccine appears set to govern in early trade, if only. Sentiment will be tested by a less favorable oil demand-supply outlook and the intensifying US-China joust over Hong Kong, which threatens trade deal. Following the surprise build in the API print, players will be guarded awaiting the EIA report. Also on radar, Eurozone Economic sentiment and 3 major US data points (Durable goods, GDP, Jobless claims – on the ...

Sea of red on COVID-19 – Brent, Ruble hit Ahead: Bucking trend not likely. Global bourses are deep red, spooked by the un-abating spread of COVID-19 that has sent economic growth outlook spiraling downward. The consequent sapping of demand, together with an expected hit from the supply side (Saudi Arabia and Russia prepare to ramp up production), have sent Brent and the ruble plummeting. The Russia trade is set for another rocky ride. For more details, please contact: Oleg Achkasov ( / / ) Luis Saenz ( / / 23)

Recovery continues Ahead: Virus fears wane, but strong growth drivers absent. The miracle cure to the coronavirus, news of which likely supported yesterday’s gains, is still a long way off becoming a marketable drug. Meanwhile, the Chinese economy will continue to slow, infecting commodity prices and providing a drag on global financial markets. Against this, any so-called rally cannot be said to be founded on sustainable growth. Still, yesterday’s macro data in the West did positively surprise and opportunistic buying may continue, especially if the oil price supports. All told, the virus’ M...

Brent v Coronavirus contagion, frothy heights Ahead: Choppy trade in play. Déjà vu, the same variables will dictate the directions of trade, which translates into choppy waters ahead. To the upside, December industrial production accelerated strongly after almost coming to a standstill in November – BCS expects the trend to continue into 2020. Also positive, Brent has recouped some losses, albeit upside is capped by still the uncertain outlook for global growth. Indeed, players are taking a more sober view on benefits accruing from US-China/EU trade deals, while the coronavirus has further sp...

Trade optimism v Brexit angst Ahead: Yet more crosscurrents. The US-China trade front offers fodder for the bulls – Chief economic adviser Kudlow said it is possible that the threatened 15 December tariff hikes may be lifted if trade talks continue to go well. Sentiment will continue to be tempered as the Brexit saga continues – UK PM Johnson has submitted the Withdrawal Agreement Bill to Parliament for a vote; passage would set the stage for Brexit, albeit passage and exit by the 31 October deadline are longshots. Sector Overview - US dollar very weak

In a race to the bottom for the US dollar, the local gold price slipped a couple of pounds per ounce (£/oz) to just under £955/oz. It was a totally different story for US dollar priced commodities. Silver was also helped by a recovery from the previous day’s fall, which had occurred in response to US tariffs on solar panels. It is argued that growth elsewhere, particularly in China, will make up for any shortfall in US demand.
