Star Bulk (Hold, TP: USD5.80) - 2020 guidance at cash break-even

We reiterate our HOLD on Star Bulk and have cut our target price to USD5.8 (USD6.8). Through the combination of fuel spreads and timecharter coverage, the company has secured a large part of its earnings days for 2020 near cash break-even, protecting the downside in the current challenging dry bulk market.

Vermilion Short Shots: Technically Vulnerable Stocks

Short Shots is a collection of technically vulnerable charts culled from the Negative Inflecting and Toppy columns within our Weekly Compass report or from various technical screening processes. The charts contained in this report have developed concerning technical patterns that suggest further price deterioration is likely. For these reasons Short Shots can also be a great source of ideas for investors interested in short-selling candidates.

Vermilion Compass: Weekly Equity Strategy

Semiconductors, Transportation improving The S&P 500 continues to move higher on narrow leadership, which is not inspiring a bullish outlook. Currently leading the S&P 500 higher in terms of RS are Technology, Services, Facebook (FB), Amazon (AMZN), and Procter & Gamble (PG). If this were a bull market, (1) PG would likely NOT be listed here as leadership, and (2) we would expect to see participation broaden out to Discretionary (RCD), Transportation (IYT), banks (KBE), Industrials (XLI), and small-caps (IWM). All of these areas are still consolidating below meaningful resistance, and we cont...

Dry bulk shipping (DNB Markets) - U-shaped hopes, but liquidity fears

We reiterate our HOLD recommendations on the dry bulk stocks we cover, and assume a U-shaped recovery, but believe liquidity could become a concern for some in Q4 unless rates pick up.

Shipping down to HOLD on virus

We are shipping analysts not virus experts, but we have been reading international press, WHO, the Lancet, JAMA and China CDC reports to assess the potential impact of on shipping. This is not a comprehensive study, but we are sharing what we have learned so far. In conclusion: we see short-term downside potential to shipping and have downgraded our entire shipping universe to HOLD.

Star Bulk Minor model adjustments

We have updated our estimates post the Q4 results. We do not consider these changes to be material, and have not changed our BUY recommendation or USD10.4 target price. In our sector report (dated 13 February 2020), we lowered our dry bulk rate forecasts due to coronavirus disruption and a general expectation of lower Chinese GDP growth. We have now updated our model for the company’s reported average TCE rate of USD12.6k/day for 72% of its fleet in Q1, delayed scrubber installations, and updated fuel spreads. Star Bulk is trading at 0.63x our NAV of USD13.3/share.
