The Fed in 2026

The outcome of the next FOMC meeting is no longer in any doubt. The Fed will cut rates by 25bp for the third time this year, following a 100bp easing in 2024. All eyes are now on 2026. The Fed will have a new chair. The lucky candidate (not yet officially appointed) is Kevin Hassett, one of Trump's most loyal advisers. His loyalty is being rewarded, which is sure to rekindle the debate on the politicisation of monetary policy. Equity market generally likes rate cuts, but the bond market may take a dim view if it believes the Fed is coming under the control of the White House. Another change on the horizon: the Fed will buy back government securities (modestly).
