·      In an earnings release today, Habib Bank Limited’s (HBL) reported an NPAT PkR15.2bn (EPS: PkR10.32) vs. PkR3.9bn (EPS: PkR2.53) reported in the same period last year. The result was significantly higher than our estimates mainly on account of capital gains of PkR4.4bn reported in 2QCY20.

·      On a quarterly basis, 2QCY20 earnings stood at of PkR11.1bn (EPS: PkR7.53), +2.7xQoQ, possibly being the first quarter under normalized administrative costs post US-windup (C/I down to 48.7% vs. 77.0% in 1QCY20). Moreover, repricing gains (gross yield +11.2ppt QoQ to 49.7%) along with capital gains overshadowed higher provisioning expense (PkR4.8bn in 2QCY20 vs. PkR0.6bn in the previous quarter) clarity on which is awaited.

·      Effective tax stood at 40.7% in 1QCY20 vis-à-vis 42.4% in the previous quarter.
