American Water Infrastructure Investments Ensures Reliable Service to Our Customers

Each year, American Water (NYSE: AWK) invests around $1 billion nationally on infrastructure assets to continue to provide essential services to customers. As part of that commitment, today, American Water announced its participation in the national advocacy and educational event, Infrastructure Week, which takes place from May 15-19, 2017.

“We all depend on safe, reliable and affordable infrastructure in our everyday lives. Water and wastewater infrastructure in particular is vital to our health, communities, and economy,” said Susan Story, CEO, American Water.

American Water state subsidiaries across the country are continually investing to replace aging infrastructure, upgrade existing or construct new facilities, ensure fire protection and comply with the latest water quality standards. This week we will highlight several of these infrastructure investments from Illinois to Virginia on Twitter and Facebook.

“American Water will invest about $6 billion dollars in the next five years in our nation-wide system of pipes, plants, and pumps. We are committed to this level of investment because it's critical to maintaining the service that our customers both demand and deserve,” said Story. “We are also committed to running our business as efficiently as possible to ensure that our customers’ bills remain affordable.”

Across the country, businesses, labor organizations, elected officials and more will come together to spread the message about how infrastructure enhances our local and regional economy, our quality of life, our safety, and the strength of our communities.

Recently, the American Society of Civil Engineers' (ASCE) latest Report Card for America's Infrastructure, issued every four years since 2001, gave the nation's water systems a D grade and wastewater systems a D+ grade. This remains in line with the last few reports, and heightens the sense of urgency to take actions that will turn around the condition of this often-overlooked category of infrastructure.

According to a recent study commissioned the Value of Water Campaign (VoW), investment in water infrastructure has direct economic benefits and creates high-quality jobs. With a commitment to invest nearly $6 billion invested over the next five years, American Water will help create jobs in and strengthen the communities we serve nationally.
