American Water Set to Collaborate and Share Insights at 2017 NARUC Summer Policy Summit

American Water (NYSE: AWK), the nation’s largest publicly traded water and wastewater utility company, announced today the company will play an active role in the National Association of Regulatory Utility Commissioners’ (NARUC) Summer Policy Summit from July 16 – 19, 2017, in San Diego. American Water will have a strong presence at the conference with several expert presenters.

On July 17, President and Chief Executive Officer Susan Story will participate in a panel entitled “Innovative Technologies across Utility Sectors.” This session will focus on how utilities are leveraging innovative technologies to achieve better customer service, greater resiliency, and efficiency. The panel will discuss innovative approaches from the nuclear, water, solar, and energy angles.

Also that day, Rich Svindland, president, California American Water, will participate in a panel on using desalination as a water source. He will discuss the technology behind desalination as well as provide an update on the progress of California American Water’s Monterey Peninsula desalination project.

On July 18, Zia Bukhari, a senior scientist with American Water, will participate in a panel titled, “Beyond Lead: Emerging Contaminants and Meeting Customer Expectations." This panel will examine the health risks of microbial and chemical contamination and explore possible regulatory and technological solutions.

Later that day, Jim Jenkins, vice president of Regulatory & Public Policy, will participate in a panel regarding "Ratemaking and Cloud Computing." The session will explore the treatment of cloud computing service costs by regulators in the ratemaking process.

Each year in July, NARUC convenes a series of meetings that provide in-depth analysis of policy issues that are relevant to state utility regulators as well as stakeholder groups and federal regulators. Formerly known as the Summer Committee Meetings, this event draws national experts and policymakers to a forum that upholds the tenets of serving the public interest: safe, reliable, and affordable service. NARUC members are focused on learning and sharing best practices, ensuring that the important role of state regulators is understood and appreciated on the national stage, and advancing key resolutions that will influence policy.
