Over the next several months, New Jersey American Water will be investing $3.6 million in water infrastructure improvement projects in North Plainfield and Green Brook Township, both in Somerset County. These improvements are part of New Jersey American Water’s multimillion dollar program to accelerate the renewal of water infrastructure that is reaching the end of its useful life in more than 100 communities across the state.

Work has already started in North Plainfield as part of a two phase project that will conclude in the Spring of 2017. During the first part of this improvement project, New Jersey American Water will be replacing service lines from the main in the street to the curb box as well as installing meter pits at the curb area of each property along the route. After installation, all that will be visible is a 15-inch circular cover that will be flush with the ground.

In the spring of 2017, New Jersey American Water will continue this project by cleaning and lining water mains. Cleaning and lining involves scouring the inside of the main to remove harmless mineral sediment that has built up over time. A thin coating of cement is then applied to the pipe’s inner walls to improve the structural integrity of the pipe and extend its useful life by decades.

In North Plainfield, New Jersey American Water crews are working on the following streets:

• Clinton Avenue, from Warfield Road to Vermeule Place and from Mountainview Drive to Parkview Avenue
• Greenbrook Road, from Clinton Avenue to West End Avenue
• Rockview Avenue, from Clinton Avenue to Harrington Avenue
• Parkview Avenue, from Clinton Avenue to Albert Street
• Fisk Place, from Clinton Avenue to Albert Street
• Judges Lane, from Greenbrook Road to the end of the roadway
• Mountainview Drive, from Clinton Avenue to the end of the roadway
• Redmont Road, from Mountainview Drive to Warfield Road
• Glen Court, from Oakridge Avenue to Oakridge Avenue

Work has already begun and will generally be Mondays through Fridays, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Work on Saturdays may also be required to maintain the project schedule. Temporary restoration work will be completed as the project progresses. Final lawn restoration will occur in the spring of 2017, and final paving will be completed after the cleaning and lining of the mains are completed.

In Green Brook Township, work will begin on December 8 to install roughly 160 feet of new ductile iron main along Mountain Parkway, from Route 22 to Wickett Avenue. This project will also include interconnecting the main along Mountain Parkway at the intersections of Greenbrook Road, Route 22, Wickett Avenue and Blue Hills Terrace.

Work hours in Green Brook Township will be from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., Mondays through Fridays. Weekends and evening hours are not expected unless required to maintain the project schedule. Weather permitting, the project will be completed by the end of December. Final paving and restoration will be completed in the spring of 2017.

Customers in Green Brook Township may experience a temporary service interruption while New Jersey American Water interconnects the new main to the distribution system. Customers may also experience a slight temporary discoloration of water. If this happens, customers are advised to let a cold water tap in the home run until it is clear.
