Comcast Announces Gigabit Internet Service Coming to Oregon/SW Washington

Comcast today announced it will start offering a residential gigabit Internet service to customers in Oregon/SW Washington in early 2017. The company will deliver these super-fast speeds with DOCSIS 3.1 technology, which uses the existing wiring that most people already have in their homes.

“Technology continues to evolve and we never stop working to ensure our customers get the fastest internet speeds available,” says Rodrigo Lopez, Sr. Regional Vice-President for Comcast Oregon/SW Washington. “One gig residential service will be another game-changer for Comcast’s customers, by again enhancing the online experience for households desiring more speed and using multiple devices.”

Comcast currently offers Gigabit Pro across its Oregon/SW Washington service area, a 2 Gigabit, fiber-based product that requires a professional installation and equipment, and is designed for the most advanced digital homes. The company’s new 1 Gig service will use the existing communications lines that are already in most people’s homes. As a result, it has the potential to reach more homes even faster and allows for broad deployment across communities. To enjoy the service, all customers will need to do is install a new DOCSIS 3.1 compatible cable modem that is capable of delivering gigabit speeds.

In the past 15 years, Comcast has increased Internet speeds 17 times. The company also nearly doubles the capacity of its network every 18-24 months.

“The economic vitality of the Oregon/SW Washington region is due in part to the technology infrastructure that underlies our successful businesses,” says Pam Treece, Executive Director of the Westside Economic Alliance. “Today’s announcement by Comcast about the coming availability of 1 gig residential internet speeds is another leap forward, as it brings this technology into our homes.”

In Partial Win for Cable, Trump Memoranda Appears to Protect CBRS

Late Friday, President Trump released a new Presidential Memoranda on 6G and Spectrum. While what the Memoranda said is largely a restatement of what we have previously reported, we think the most important element for investors is what it didn’t say; specifically, that by omission it appears to protect the spectrum known as the Citizens Band Radio Services (CBRS) currently used by cable (and others) for wireless services. In this note we provide an analysis of the Memoranda.

CMCSA Quick Hit: A Merger Between NBCU and WBD?

Press reports indicate that Comcast has submitted a revised bid for Warner Bros. Discovery (WBD) and has offered to merge it with its NBCUniversal division (NBCU). WBD shareholders would receive a mix of cash and stock in the new entity. We think there are merits to this transaction but getting a deal approved by the regulators could prove challenging.
