ComEd Volunteers Spark the Holiday Spirit with ‘12 Days of Power’

With the holiday season upon us, ComEd is in full swing with its “12 Days of Power” campaign, which highlights how employees will spend the rest of this year donating their time, energy, and financial support to various nonprofits in communities throughout Illinois.

“Our customers and our communities are one and the same and we care about their well-being,” said Anne Pramaggiore, ComEd president and CEO. “Just as we provide safe and reliable energy for our customers, we also take seriously the broader responsibilities to nourish our local communities, particularly during this season of sharing. Our employees are some of the best volunteers around, and I’m proud of and inspired by all they are doing this holiday season to help and empower others.”

At ComEd, volunteerism is a core company value. Employees are on track to volunteer more than 20,000 hours in 2016, a number that has consistently gone up over the past several years. In addition to donating time, employees this year have given more than $1.2 million to local charities and recently donated $57,000 of those funds on Giving Tuesday, which was Nov. 29. Here are some of ComEd employees’ 12 Days of Power projects:

  • Dec. 1 – Dec. 15 – Teaming up with local Marine Corps chapters to assist Toys for Tots in collecting toys for families less fortunate this holiday.
  • Dec. 10 – Mentoring and educating students about engineering and other STEM careers at Project SYNCERE, which provides STEM programming to youth in under-served communities.
  • Dec. 13 – Unloading deliveries and stocking the shelves and coolers at Lakeview Pantry, one of Chicago's largest and longest-operating food pantries.
  • Dec. 14 – Assisting the Hearts & Flour Holiday Bakery with scooping, mixing, baking, packaging and displaying bakery products at Misericordia, a community of care that maximizes potential for persons with mild to profound developmental disabilities, many of whom are also physically challenged.
  • Dec. 15 – Passing out Christmas dinner packages, clothing, and Christmas toys to needy families in the Chicago Heights, Park Forest, Matteson and surrounding areas through Respond Now. Respond Now enhances quality of life in south suburban communities by working to alleviate hunger and prevent homelessness for people at risk.
  • Dec. 16 – Passing out cheer and pizza during a party for Veteran patients at Hines VA, in partnership with the American Red Cross.
  • Dec. 17 – Honoring thousands of our nation’s heroes buried at Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery by placing wreaths on veterans' graves with the help of Operation Care Package, a public charity dedicated to the mission that no Hero serving our Nation should be forgotten.
  • Dec. 17 – Assembling lunch for the homeless and writing inspiring notes to place inside the bags through #HashtagLunchBag, a humanity service movement dedicated to empowering and inspiring humanity to reap the benefits of giving through the use of social media. The organization creates and uses bagged lunches, complete with love messages, as a vessel to spread love and share experiences to inspire others.
  • Dec. 19 – Conducting mock interviews with students at Von Steuben High School who are applying for internships at local STEM corporations.
  • Dec. 21 – Members of ComEd’s Energy Force, the country's first energy-efficiency education program designed for and taught by people with disabilities, will be at Chicago Botanic Garden teaching community members about holiday energy efficiency.
  • Dec. 22 – Distributing gifts to students at Rodolfo Lozano Bilingual & International Center, a Chicago school committed to establishing a collaborative and caring learning environment amongst children, teachers, local community, and parents.
  • Dec. 23 – Helping to make beds with clean sheets and preparing and serving lunch to residents of Pacific Garden Mission, a place of refuge and transformation for the homeless and hurting in Chicago.
