Two BGE Employees Receive Company’s Highest Recognition for Volunteerism and Commitment to Community

BGE and its parent company, Exelon, recently honored two outstanding BGE employees at the annual Energy for the Community Awards ceremony in Baltimore. The Energy for the Community Awards are the company’s highest honor recognizing employees for their exceptional commitment to volunteering and advancing our communities.

The BGE honorees were:

  • Bakhtavar Mody Wykpisz, manager of Support Services for BGE for her work with the Believe In Tomorrow Children’s Foundation
  • Carolyn (Sue) Ziegler, senior training specialist for BGE for her work with – The Friends of the Howard County Library Inc.

At the event, BGE awarded $15,000 in grants to the two local nonprofit organizations where these employees volunteer.

“Bakhtavar and Sue are two great examples of the many BGE employees who lend their time, talent, and support to causes that make a difference in the community,” said Valencia McClure, vice president of governmental and external affairs and corporate relations for BGE. “Their passion for volunteering touches the lives of so many people across central Maryland.”

Now in its 11th year, Exelon, through the Energy for the Community Awards, is recognizing 24 employees across its family of companies and donating $200,000 in their honor to nonprofit organizations in the Baltimore, Chicago, Philadelphia and Washington D.C. areas. Bakhtavar Mody Wykpisz, manager of Support Services – Believe In Tomorrow Children’s Foundation

The Believe In Tomorrow Children’s Foundation is a national charity based in Baltimore, Md. Its mission is to provide families whose children are undergoing critical care medical treatment with hospital and respite housing that is uniquely designed and managed to ease the stress that families endure throughout their child’s treatment process. Bakhtavar has been volunteering with the organization for nine years and her support of the Family Supper program has real, tangible, and direct impact on the children and families it serves. Bakhtavar has organized and served more than 90 family suppers at the flagship Hospital Housing property, the Children's House at Johns Hopkins, helping to feed 656 families. The award from Exelon will allow Believe In Tomorrow to add a wheel chair lift for the Believe In Tomorrow House at St. Casimir which is located in the Canton area of Baltimore.

Carolyn (Sue) Ziegler, senior training specialist – The Friends of the Howard County Library Inc.

Howard County Library System (HCLS) Project Literacy is a highly successful adult basic education initiative made possible by grant funding from the Maryland State Department of Labor, Licensing and Regulation, Friends of the Howard County Library, and Exelon. Sue has been volunteering with Project Literacy since 1990. Through 26 years of one-on-one teaching with the program, she has acquired extensive knowledge on teaching strategies, characteristics of adult students, and obstacles that could impede their learning. The award from Exelon will be used for classroom materials, and to supplement the costs of tutoring hours. There is a waiting list for students each year, and with the increase of funds, the program will be able to add placements.

In 2016, BGE employees volunteered more than 20,000 hours with local community organizations and served as board members for more than 130 local nonprofits.
