All Change? Investing in a year of global elections
The year 2024 has been an extraordinary one for the global electorate, with more than half the world's population going to the polls in elections in 50 countries from Algeria to Venezuela. While some arrived with an element of surprise – from snap elections in France and Japan to the earlier-than-expected date of the UK general election – others, notably the US presidential election, were set long in advance, although even there, the eleventh-hour substitution of the Democrat candidate was an unexpected event. There are certain sectors and regions that may be more affected than others by a change in political leadership. We have therefore brought together a group of investment trust managers of both broad and specialist strategies to discuss what investors can expect in a changing global political landscape.BlackRock Commodities Income Investment Trust is an investment trust company. Co.'s investment manager is BlackRock Investment Management (UK) Limited and its alternative fund manager is BlackRock Fund Managers Limited. At Feb 28 2017, the investment portfolio comprised listed equity investments valued at £648.0 million.
Foreign & Colonial Investment Trust is an investment trust company investing primarily in an international portfolio of publicly listed equities, as well as unlisted securities and Private Equity. Co. is managed by F&C Investment Business Limited, which also acts as the Alternative Investment Fund Manager.
International Biotechnology Trust is an independent investment trust company. Co. invests primarily in biotechnology and other life science companies. The portfolio is split between large, mid and small capitalisation companies, primarily quoted on stock exchanges in North America, though investments will also be made in Europe, Asia and Australia. Investments may also be made into unquoted companies and into funds not quoted on a stock exchange, including venture capital funds. Co. has delegated responsibility for day-to-day investment of its assets to the Alternative Investment Fund Manager, SV Health Managers LLP.
JPMorgan US Smaller Companies Investment Trust is an investment trust company. Co. invests in U.S. smaller companies. Co. is managed by JPMorgan Funds Limited, its Alternative Investment Fund Manager. As of Dec 31 2017, the value of Co.'s investment portfolio was £175.4 million.
