EJF Investments (EJFI) | Initiation: Niche opportunity with c 9% yield

EJF Investments (EJFI) is a specialist debt fund giving UK investors access to the large and diverse US community bank sector, mainly through collateralised debt obligations (CDOs) and other structures that allow banks to keep operating within their regulatory capital ratios by issuing regulatory debt and by selling on books of loans to third parties at attractive yields. The fund, managed by sector specialist EJF Capital, offers investors an attractive, stable yield and has delivered NAV total returns of c 9% a year since launch. It is differentiated from private credit and other structured finance funds, such as those investing in collateralised loan obligations (CLOs) by its focus on regulated assets (banks and, to a lesser extent, insurance companies) with diversified books of business (for example, not overly exposed to areas such as energy or software), securing investment grade credit ratings, and lower leverage ratios. This translates into what its managers describe as a ‘steady Eddie, sleep-at-night' product that has never suspended or cut its dividend.
