Banks: Shifting towards retail volumes

WIG Banks are down 13.7% since February and 20.4% from their peak in
January, which we believe exaggerate consensus earnings downgrades
due to changes in the interest rates outlook. Sentiment towards equities
remains bleak with the risk of a looming trade war between the US and
China and interest rates hikes in the US. However, we believe the latest
market reaction creates a good entry point to some of the banking
names (Bank Pekao and Alior Bank remain our top picks, while BZ WBK,
Bank Handlowy and PKO BP are upgraded to Buy), as fundamentally we
see still good earnings momentum. New volume growth, especially in the
more profitable mortgage and consumer segments, looks impressive,
while lower-margin corporate loan growth remains subdued. The
banking sector has reported some weakness in NIM, partly seasonal in
1Q18, but we believe it should gradually recover in the coming quarters.
The IFRS 9 introduction caused no major rise in ongoing provisioning
levels in 1Q18 and assets quality remains solid given a buoyant labour
market and GDP consensus upgrades. We expect the NI of covered
banks to grow by 11%/10% YoY in 2018-19E with no domestic rate hikes
expected until 2020. This is slightly below consensus expectations (-1%/-
2% 2018E-19E). In our view the biggest risk looms from external shocks
with slower GDP growth and/or PLN depreciation, as well as net
provisioning volatility under IFRS 9. The sector looks reasonably valued
on a 2018E P/E of 13.4x, at a 13% premium to CEE banks on 11.9x and
28% to FTSE 300 banks index at 10.5x (on BBG consensus).
