Bemis Meets Our Expectations in 2016, Margins Set to Widen in 2017; Raising Fair Value Estimate
Bemis' fourth quarter generally lined up with our expectations. In 2016, the U.S. Packaging raw material pass-through reduced segment sales by 5%, while growing operating profit roughly 2% to $400 million. Efficiency gains in the U.S. were partially offset by operational missteps in Bemis' Global Packaging segment. We still expect Bemis' push to reinvigorate its asset base will lead to margin expansion over the next five years.
