Best Buy's Smart Home and other services offerings intriguing, but longer-term questions persist.
Heading into Best Buy's 2017 investor event, our key focus was the company's plans to evolve to a more service-oriented business model and what this means for longer-term financials. While certain aspects of the Best Buy 2020 plan are intriguing--most notably, the company's potential to service consumer needs across a wide number of smart home devices--and should offer some near-term differentiation, they aren't enough to change our no-moat rating or ease concerns that Best Buy will run into the...Best Buy provides computing and mobile phones, consumer electronics, appliances, entertainment, services and other products. The company operates two reportable segments: Domestic, which is comprised of the operations in all states, districts and territories of the U.S. under various brand names including Best Buy, bestbuy.com, Best Buy Direct, Best Buy Express, Best Buy Mobile, Geek Squad, GreatCall, Magnolia and Pacific Kitchen and Home; and International, which is comprised of all operations in Canada and Mexico under the brand names Best Buy, Best Buy Express, Best Buy Mobile, Geek Squad and the domain names bestbuy.ca and bestbuy.com.mx.
