BNP Paribas Reports Good 1Q Results; Global Markets Benefit From Improving Activity
BNP Paribas reported good first-quarter results, as improving market conditions lifted global markets operations from weak results last year. Net income increased 13% to EUR 1.9 billion excluding exceptional items. Cost of risk decreased significantly by 32 basis points, or EUR 165 million in monetary terms. Capital generation was in line with previous quarters. Co.'s business activities are divided into two segments: Retail Banking & Services and Corporate and Investment Banking. The Retail Banking and Services business includes domestic markets and international financial services. The Corporate and Institutional Banking comprises of corporate banking, global markets, and securities services. Other activities include principal investments, which related to Co.'s central treasury function, some costs related to crossbusiness projects, the residential mortgage lending business of personal finance, and certain investments.
