CME Group’s longer-term growth drivers are real, but recent volumes appear frothy.

CME Group’s fourth quarter capped off a great year, and we think that 2017 should be equally profitable. For the year, the company reported net income of $1.5 billion, or $4.53 per diluted share, up 12% on an adjusted basis from the previous year. Compared with 2013, 2016 earnings per share were 55% higher. Record average daily trading volume, 15.6 million contracts, and expense control drove this result.
