Fairfax Off to a Slow Start in 1Q
After unwinding its equity hedges late last year and putting its investment portfolio in a more bullish position, Fairfax’s first quarter results highlight the company’s underwriting efficiency now that the investment side is more in line with peers. We estimate the annualized operating ROE for the quarter at 4%, supporting our view that Fairfax needs to generate alpha in order to generate adequate returns, and that alpha remains quite unreliable.
