One-Time Gain Boosts 1Q Results; Underlying Fundamentals Remain On Track for Fifth Third

No-moat-rated Fifth Third’s first-quarter results were, on the surface, extraordinary, but there was a large (expected) one-time benefit from the revaluation of its Vantiv stake after the merger with Worldpay. Normalizing for this, and several other one-time items, earnings per share were $0.57, up 10% from adjusted earnings of $0.52 in the fourth quarter.
