No-moat-rated Harvey Norman generates just over half of its operating profit from Australian discretionary retailing. This income is exposed to a cyclical slowdown in the Australian housing market and the anticipated growth of a formidable new competitor in Amazon. Sales in highly commoditised consumer electronics and home appliances, which we estimate present about two thirds of franchisee sales, are the most vulnerable to online competition.
