We expect margins to stagnate for International Paper as price competition grows.

While the major linerboard companies successfully raised prices on the paper used in box production, box prices have not followed suit. For integrated producers like International Paper that produce both the linerboard and boxes, this means margin will be weaker until box prices rise. However, based on RISI's latest survey of box-plant managers, we think that a 2%-4% increase in box prices is likely to take hold over the next few quarters, which should boost margins throughout 2018.
