International Paper Turns in a Solid Year Amid Tight Containerboard Conditions

International Paper's fourth quarter and full year proved stronger than originally expected, as profitability across all three segments meaningfully improved over the course of 2017. Conditions are poised to get better still, given our expectation that a proposed $50 containerboard price hike goes through near the end of the first quarter. Given our raised near-term expectations and a newly lowered tax rate to 26%, we've raised our fair value estimate to $47 from $41 on no-moat IP.
