Loblaw continues to face ongoing intense competition amid a near-term deflationary environment.
Hindered by a deflationary and competitive landscape, no-moat Loblaw reported just 0.2% sales growth in its first quarter. That said, despite the challenges, Loblaw reported operating margins of 4.7%, up from 4.2% in the prior year. We do not plan to adjust our 2017 2.8% sales growth forecast, as comparisons ease the rest of the year, but expect to increase our existing 4.1% margin estimate for this year toward 4.5%.
