Lowe’s margin expansion tempered as Rona acquisition unfolds; housing fundamentals remain favorable.

Following on the heels of Home Depot’s solid results, Lowe’s second quarter looked tepid in comparison, generating 2% same-store sales increases and 9% earnings growth (versus 4.7% comps and 15% earnings growth at HD). These figures are relatively solid in light of a difficult brick and mortar landscape and see home improvement remaining one of the most insulated categories from rising e-commerce penetration, thanks to its category exposure and brand equity, which underlies our wide moat rating....
