Narrow-moat M&T Bank reported a 13.32% return on average total shareholders’ equity in the second quarter, much improved from the 9.67% of the year-ago quarter. Rising interest rates contributed to a widening of the net interest margin from 3.45% to 3.83% over the past 12 months and an 8% increase in GAAP net interest income over the same time frame. Banking activities are primarily focused on consumers residing in New York State, Maryland, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware, Connecticut, Virginia, West Virginia and the District of Columbia and on small and medium-size businesses based in those areas. Certain subsidiaries also conduct activities in other areas.
