We’d Consider Taking Profits on the News of a Maxim-Renesas Merger; Maintain $50 FVE for Maxim

On Monday, CNBC reported that Japanese chipmaker Renesas Electronics is in talks to acquire Maxim Integrated in a deal approaching $20 billion, which would equate to roughly $70 per share for Maxim based on equity value. The deal would imply an 18% premium to Maxim’s last share price in the $59 range prior to the report. We think such a deal between the two firms is plausible and would make strategic sense, given Renesas’ focus on the automotive sector (about half of revenue) and Maxim’s booming...
