Slow Start to Starbucks U.S. in 2018, but International Growth and Capital-Allocation Stories Intact
Starbucks finds itself in the same position it was a year ago, with a slow start to the fiscal year putting it into a hole regarding its full-year outlook and raising questions about menu, operational, and marketing strategies. U.S. comps came in at 2% with transaction growth flat amid underwhelming holiday sales and less traffic from nonrewards customers in the afternoon/evening dayparts. Management also implied "somewhat softer" second-quarter comps, suggesting acceleration is needed to reach ...Starbucks is a roaster, marketer and retailer of coffee. The company's Channel Development segment includes roasted whole bean and ground coffees, Seattle's Best Coffee?, Starbucks- and Teavana-branded single-serve products, a variety of ready-to-drink beverages, and other products sold worldwide outside of the company's company-operated and licensed stores.
