Donald Trump and the labour market

Donald Trump is starting his second term in office with a strong job market. Even though it has edged up in recent months, the jobless rate remains low at 4.1%. At the beginning of his first term, it was 4.7%. Several points in his programme may affect employment conditions. In recent days, deportations of undocumented immigrants have taken place. The primary objective was to secure media coverage. This is a far cry from the millions of deportations promised, which would undoubtedly lead to labour shortages and wage pressures. Another initiative launched this week aims to massively shrink the federal government's workforce. Here again, the media effect is oversized compared to its real impact on employment.
