I feel good (about US post-election sentiment)
Is economic behaviour dictated by the good or bad vibrations that agents feel? Almost a century ago, John Maynard Keynes saw in the fluctuations of investment the role of "animal spirits", the domination of spontaneous optimism over rational calculation. If this is the case today (a big if) then sentiment surveys conducted since Donald Trump's victory point to an acceleration in spending. Promises of tax cuts and deregulation have sparked considerable optimism among CEOs of large companies, small entrepreneurs and households alike. A similar phenomenon occurred in 2016 without changing much their economic behaviour.
