Illegal tariffs? Half a percentage point of GDP increase in deficit

Tariffs are a form of taxation on US citizens. The power to decide on taxes is the exclusive prerogative of Congress. On this basis, there appears to be a solid foundation for ruling that Donald Trump's use of emergency powers to impose certain tariffs on his own authority is illegal. The case has been referred to the Supreme Court. The judges were quite sceptical of the Trump administration's arguments, arguing that these tariffs are not primarily intended to increase Treasury revenues. At stake is an estimated loss of revenue of approximately $ 200bn per year over the next decade, and the reimbursement of about $100bn already collected in 2025.
