Should Powell be fired?

A few weeks ago, Donald Trump jokingly wondered, or so we would like to believe, if he could appoint himself chairman of the Fed. There has also been talk of Scott Bessent heading both the Treasury and the Fed. In both cases, it would be easy to set key interest rates at zero and refinance federal debt with short-term securities. This would reduce debt servicing and help finance government deficits. A short-term gain, but then... Historical experience amply demonstrates that subordinating monetary policy to fiscal policy leads to currency debasement and financial turmoil. Firing Powell would undermine the credibility of the next Fed Chair.
