This morbid fascination with trade tariffs

According to Donald Trump, trade tariffs are seen as a remedy to alleviate, if not all the ills of the world, at least all the problems of the United States. Raising tariffs would halt deindustrialisation, curb China's technological expansion, end unfair competition from the rest of the world, and provide a source of revenue that could replace taxes paid by businesses and households. We would not stop at such fallacious views if they were not the deep conviction of the next president of the United States, who may unfortunately attempt to make it one of the pillars of his economic policy with highly negative consequences.
