US consumer check-up: in good overall health
Contradicting the negative signals that were emerging this summer, the latest macro data are reassuring for the US economy, and especially for the consumer. Retail sales, a good proxy for spending on goods, have resumed an upward trend. As inflation has slowed, this reflects an increase in volumes. Spending on services is on a fairly steady upward trend.
